Bosatsu

The 5 Great Bosatsu [Godai Bosatsu]

They are called Godai Bosatsu or sometimes Gohou Bosatsu. No specific doctrines exist explaining their origin, however, it is said that they are derived from the priest Kuukai's esoteric teachings. In esoteric Buddhism, the notion of Buddha is simply one embodiment or stage of the wheel of own-nature, reached through enlightenment. As these Buddha transmogrified to Bosatsu and preached Buddhism in an easy to understand way they are called Shouohourinjin (Preaching transformation of Buddha). They are also called Kyouryourinjin(Discipline transformation of Buddha)as they punish those who disobey Buddha and try to save them by scaring them back onto the road to enlightenment by expressing extreme wrath. There are three kinds of transformation of Buddha, one is Jishourinjin(Buddha itself) of the Five Wisdom Buddha represented by Dainichi Nyorai, the one is Shouhourinjin (Preaching transformation of Buddha) of the Five Great Bosatsu represented by Kongou-haramitsu Bosatsu, the other is Kyouryourinjin(Discipline transformation of Buddha) of the Five Great Myoo represented by Fudou Myoo.
